1. Light Requirements

Ideal Conditions:

  • Paphiopedilum orchids prefer low to medium indirect light.
  • Place in an east-facing window for soft morning light or a shaded
    south/west-facing window.

Avoid:

  • Direct sunlight which can scorch the leaves.

Signs of Light Issues:

  • Dark green leaves indicate insufficient light.
  • Yellowish leaves with reddish or purple edges may indicate too much light.

2. Temperature and Humidity

Temperature:

  • Cool-growing varieties: 10–24°C (50–75°F).
  • Warm-growing varieties: 16–29°C (60–85°F).
  • Avoid drafts or temperatures below 10°C (50°F).

Humidity:

  • Maintain 50–70% humidity.
  • Increase humidity with a humidity tray, misting, or a humidifier if necessary.

Air Circulation:

  • Good air circulation is essential to prevent fungal or bacterial
    infections.

3. Watering

Frequency:

  • Water when the top inch of the potting media feels dry but avoid letting the
    roots dry out completely.
  • Typically, this means watering every 5–7 days during the growing season and
    less frequently in cooler months.

Method:

  • Use lukewarm, distilled, or rainwater.
  • Water thoroughly, allowing water to flow out of the drainage holes.
  • Avoid letting the plant sit in water to prevent root rot.

Tips:

  • Keep the central “crown” of the plant dry to avoid rot.

4. Potting and Media

Pot Type:

  • Use a pot with good drainage (plastic or clay pots work well).
  • Paphiopedilum orchids don’t have pseudobulbs, so they need consistent
moisture and should not dry out completely.

Media:

  • Use a fine-grade orchid mix that retains some moisture, such as a
combination of bark, perlite, and small amounts of moss.

Repotting:

  • Repot every 1–1.5 years, after blooming, or when the medium starts breaking
    down.
  • Remove old media and trim any dead or mushy roots before repotting.

5. Fertilizing

Type of Fertilizer:

  • Use a balanced orchid fertiliser Growth Technology
orchid myst’. (available to order via email).

Frequency:

  • Fertilise 2-3 times a week during the growing season (spring and
    summer).
  • Reduce fertilising to once a week during the dormant season
    (autumn and winter).

Flushing:

  • Flush the potting media with plain water once a month to remove
    salt buildup.

6. Light and Flowering

Flowering Conditions:

  • Paphiopedilum orchids generally bloom once or twice a year, and the flowers
    last 6–12 weeks.
  • Provide a slight drop in nighttime temperature (10–15°F) in the autumn/ winter
    to encourage blooming.

After Blooming:

  • On some species cut the flower spike back to the base after the bloom has
faded. Others can grow new buds from the current stem. Email up the
species name and image of the flower so we can clarify for you.
  • Focus on healthy leaf growth to support the next bloom cycle.

7. Leaf and Root Care

Leaf Care:

  • Keep leaves clean by gently wiping them with a damp cloth.
  • Avoid getting water trapped at the base of the leaves, as this can lead to
    crown rot.

Root Health:

  • Healthy roots are firm and white or light green/ brown.
  • Remove any black, mushy, or dead roots during repotting.

8. Common Problems and Solutions

Yellow Leaves:

  • Overwatering, insufficient light, or natural ageing.

Brown Tips on Leaves:

  • Low humidity, water with high salts/minerals, or overfertilizing.

No Blooms:

  • Insufficient light, improper temperatures, or stress from repotting.

Pests:

  • Common Pests: Mealybugs, aphids, and scale insects.
  • Solution: Use a plant-friendly pesticide regularly (available to order via
email) and wipe leaves with insecticidal soap or neem oil.

Fungal/Bacterial Infections:

  • Improve air circulation and avoid water on the leaves to prevent spotting.

9. Seasonal Care Adjustments

Spring/Summer:

  • Increase watering and fertilising as the plant enters its active growth phase.

Autumn/Winter:

  • Reduce watering and fertilising, especially if growth slows.
  • Maintain a consistent temperature to prevent stress.

10. Miscellaneous Tips

Companion Plants:

  • Avoid placing near plants that are prone to pests or require
    drastically different care.

Display Location:

  • Keep away from direct drafts, heaters, or air conditioners.

Growth Habit:

  • Some Paphiopedilum orchids produce a single bloom, while others
produce multiple blooms on one spike.

Paphiopedilum orchids are a rewarding choice for any orchid enthusiast. With their unique,
long-lasting blooms and relatively straightforward care needs, they can thrive and bloom
beautifully year after year when given proper attention.
